International Day of Older Persons

1 October 2016: Take a stand against ageism!

The theme for International Day of Older Persons this year is ‘Take a stand against ageism’.

We live in a world where people are denied their rights, simply because of their age. This must change!

Age Demands Action campaigners across the world are taking a stand by highlighting how widespread ageism is and how it leads to the discrimination, stereotyping and abuse of older people everywhere.

Will you take a stand with them? Add your photos and messages below to tell us why you're taking a stand against ageism.

I don't want children to grow up in a world, where their rights are denied because of their age. Once you have made it this far in life you should get to enjoy it free from any form of discrimination.

Ageism is so ingrained in our societies that aging has become a shameful experience and older people are dismissed as a liability rather than an asset. It's time to stop judging people based on age.

My age does not tell you who I am. I want to stand up to ageism because I want to be seen as a person, not an individual defined by the date on my birth cert.

No society can claim to be civilized if rights are not respected, It’s time for us to realize that we all will be old one day, will we put up with what our old people are putting up with right now?

We owe to our seniors what they have legated to us. A civilised society has no right to discriminate a section of the population. Old people are still capable of being useful to society.

Ageism as one of the most tolerated forms of prejudice can simply not be tolerated anymore, as virtually any of the 7.5 billion people today can experience this form of discrimination in later life.
