International Day of Older Persons
Every year on 1 October, people around the world come together to celebrate the contributions, rights and dignity of older people
Everyone has the right to age with dignity, security, good health and respect. Yet millions of older people still face barriers to healthcare, income, humanitarian assistance, participation and decision-making simply because of their age.
International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to celebrate older people’s contributions, challenge ageism and discrimination, and amplify the voices of older people in discussions that affect their lives. It also reminds governments, organisations and communities of their responsibility to respect, protect and fulfil the rights of older people.

A day to recognise older people's contributions and rights
The United Nations established International Day of Older Persons in 1990 and designated 1 October as the annual observance. Since then, the day has become a global moment to raise awareness of ageing, highlight the experiences of older people and promote a society for all ages.
The day builds on decades of international work on ageing, including the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which call for a society for all ages.
How the HelpAge global network marks the day
Across the world, members of the HelpAge global network mark International Day of Older Persons through campaigns, events, advocacy, community activities and storytelling. Together, we:
- champion older people’s rights
- challenge ageism and discrimination
- amplify older people’s voices
- share evidence and learning
- celebrate the contributions older people make every day
While activities differ from country to country, we are united by a shared vision: a world where everyone can lead a healthy, dignified and secure life as they age.

Taking action against ageism
International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to expose and challenge harmful stereotypes and fight for inclusive societies where people of all ages are valued and respected.
