Africa Ageing Conference 2027
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia | 26-28 October 2027
Building Africa’s flagship continental platform for leadership, learning, accountability and collective action
Africa’s population is changing. As more people live longer lives, countries across the continent have an opportunity to build healthier, more inclusive and more resilient societies.
The Africa Ageing Conference is being established as Africa’s flagship continental platform on ageing, longevity and demographic change. It will bring together leaders, older people and their organisations, experts and partners from across Africa and beyond to strengthen political leadership, share learning, build partnerships and drive collective action.
Why this conference matters
2027 marks an important moment for ageing and development:
- 25 years since the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing
- the final phase of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing
- the coming into force of the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons
- ongoing discussions on a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons
Conference themes and programme
The Conference will focus on four key themes:
- Population intelligence and evidence
- Healthy ageing and care
- Social protection and inclusive economies
- Climate resilience and humanitarian action
The programme will bring these themes together across three connected areas:
- Political leadership, rights and accountability
- Systems, solutions and learning
- Investment, partnerships and collective action
Older people and their organisations will play an important role in shaping the programme, contributing evidence and experience, and engaging in intergenerational dialogue.

Building on regional experience
The Africa Ageing Conference builds on previous work and collaboration on ageing in Africa, as well as regional platforms bringing together governments, researchers, civil society organisations, older people’s organisations and development partners.
This includes the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing, which demonstrated the value of regional collaboration in raising the profile of ageing and translating dialogue into practical action.
Beyond 2027
As a biennial platform, the Africa Ageing Conference will support continued engagement between Conferences, helping maintain momentum around leadership, learning, partnerships, implementation and accountability.
