On 30 July 2012, the Philippines was struck by Typhoon Saola, which brought heavy rain and floods that have affected thousands of people. To further promote intergenerational solidarity, 29 April is the European day of Solidarity between Generations. HelpAge International received the prestigious 2012 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize on 16 April in Washington. The award was given by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation at a special ceremony at the Global Philanthropy Forum's 11th annual conference in Washington.
