A Place to Grow: How the Octavia Waight Centre Supports Dignity, Independence and Purpose in Later Life

For nearly four decades, the Octavia Waight Centre, a branch of HelpAge Belize, has provided more than just residential care for older people. Established on 5 October 1986 in the Cayo District, the Centre has become a place where older adults can continue to live with dignity, maintain their independence, and pursue the activities that bring meaning to their lives.

Today, the Centre is home to 49 residents and is supported by 28 full-time staff members who provide residential care, nutritious meals, medical supervision, recreational activities, and holistic support for residents’ physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. As part of HelpAge Belize’s broader mission, the Centre promotes the rights, dignity, independence, and quality of life of older persons while contributing to healthy and inclusive ageing across the country.

Yet beyond the services and facilities, it is the stories of the residents themselves that reveal the true impact of the Centre’s work.

Creativity That Brightens Our Home

At HelpAge Belize’s Octavia Waight Centre, an 82-year-old retired nurse continues to share her creativity and talents with those around her. Having made Belize her home, she has embraced her retirement years by expressing herself through beautiful artisan creations.

Her handcrafted pieces add warmth and character throughout the facility, adorning walls and enhancing the planting displays. Through her artistry, she brings color, beauty, and inspiration to the Centre.

Her journey is a heartwarming reminder that retirement isn’t the end of giving—it is another chance to share our gifts, inspire others, and leave a little more beauty wherever we go.

A Home Away from Home: Finding Independence and Joy

After a long and dedicated career as a Revenue Agent, retirement opened a new chapter for one senior at HelpAge Belize, Octavia Waight Center. Today, she enjoys the comfort and independence of a home away from home, surrounded by a supportive community.

One of her greatest joys is gardening. Tending her plants gives her purpose and keeps her active, while watching her garden grow brings daily satisfaction and pride.

At HelpAge Belize, Octavia Waight Center, she has found more than a place to live. She has found an environment where she can maintain her independence, enjoy her interests, build meaningful connections, and continue living with dignity.
