The organisation

HelpAge International is the secretariat to the HelpAge global network, which brings together a wide range of organisations and individuals working to promote the rights and meet the needs of older women and men, nationally and/or internationally.

HelpAge is changing its mode of working in the Latin America and Caribbean region. The historical mix of operational programmes and advocacy conducted by and with network partners is ending with the closure of existing country programmes in Bolivia, Colombia, Haiti and Jamaica during 2016 and 2017.

As of March 2017, there will be a regional secretariat with a brief encompassing: regional network development, including identifying new alliances and partnerships; support to campaigning and advocacy; resource development for network activities; and information exchange and learning both within the regional network and more widely across HelpAge. There will be three sub-regions for Central America and the Caribbean; the Andean region; and the Southern Cone (including Brazil), each of which will have a network focal point embedded in a partner and paid 50% by HelpAge.

Key responsibilities

We are currently seeking a Regional Secretariat Coordinator to be responsible for advancing our network development, advocacy and communications agenda in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

You will manage a small secretariat team in Bogota, and will be responsible for developing the already strong network in the region and for ensuring that it contributes to the wider work of HelpAge.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in successfully developing networks and/or innovative partnerships. It is important that you have proven experience of pursuing advocacy agendas at different levels including municipal and national governments and multi-lateral bodies. You must have extremely strong communication, negotiation and representational skills, and the ability to work with partners at different levels.

Previous experience working on older person's issues and fluency in Portuguese and/or French are desirable requirements.
