Tackling the impact of HIV and AIDS in Africa

HelpAge is making a big difference to the way HIV and AIDS is tackled in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Ethiopia.

Older people have tremendous capacity to relieve the impact of the illness in their families and communities, so we are working with them by offering training, emotional support or business loans.

Kenya

We're providing business loans and training to grandparents so they can secure a living.

Gakunga's invested in a cow, while Veronica's set up a café!

Joseph set up a kiosk after receiving a HelpAge loan, and he's been trained as a peer educator, taking his knowledge of HIV and AIDS to the community.

Tanzania

We're ensuring that older people caring for family members living with HIV have the skills and knowledge to provide this care.

Older home-based carers are good at educating younger people about the disease and how to stop it spreading. They also encourage people to get tested.

Uganda

We're helping people living with HIV and grandparents to produce memory books containing their family history to leave to their children when they die.

South Africa

We're working with traditional health practitioners so they can provide appropriate advice about HIV and AIDS and refer older patients where necessary.

Ethiopia

We're training local community groups known as "iddirs" to provide HIV and AIDS education to older poeple and their families and home based care for people living with HIV.
