Caught up in conflict: Older people in humanitarian crisis in the Kyrgyz Republic

Caught up in conflict: Older people in humanitarian crisis in the Kyrgyz RepublicThis report evaluates both the social situation and the requirements of vulnerable older people in a post conflict environment.

Internal unrest and humanitarian crisis like those affecting Kyrgyzstan's south in June 2010 are
particularly dangerous for older people.

Vulnerable from the start, they often see their
living conditions, nutritional situation and health significantly deteriorate.

During the emergency, HelpAge International made a phone call survey with older people caught up in the conflict to draw a picture about their situation.

This report outlines the methodology and results of this work.

The interviews revealed older people in humanitarian crisis often face life-threatening problems.

However, there were also positive examples of how older people cope with these threats.

They often are, against all odds, still caring for other people and help out each other, regardless of ethnics or religion.
