Mariyam, 52, Sudan

The donkey that we gave Mariyam has changed her and her family's lives. Mariyam, 52, lives in Abuzar camp with her two sons and two daughters. She is a widow and was displaced in 2007 from Sarabjidat in West Darfur.

Mariyam and her eldest daughter used to earn money by collecting grass and wood to sell as fuel in the camps for internally displaced people (IDPs).

HelpAge staff in Sudan made contact with Mariyam during the 2009 rainy season and provided her with a donkey as part of a HelpAge programme.

Now she and her daughter can collect more wood and grass than they used to.

Mariyam's other children used to fetch water every day but now they have a donkey, only one of them has to go.

Mariyam's income has doubled since she received her donkey. The money they make is enough to support the whole family and visit her relatives living in IDP camps and Geneina.

She is also planning to get some land to grow crops.
