Mohamed explains: "In my village I owned a big farm with 330 sheep and 15 cows. This provided me with an income. I had enough for my family.

"Everyone else in my village was also happy with their work. The whole village lived like one big family, helping each other out when necessary."

"I lost everything"

"Early one morning, while we were still asleep we were woken by heavy gun shots all around our village. It was a tragic day I will never forget. I lost everything I had including my animals."

Mohamed now lives with his family in a camp for internally displaced people in North East Geneina.

When he arrived at the camp, Mohamed had no work and was entirely dependent on humanitarian aid to feed his family. Mohamed could not afford to send his children to school either.

He says: "I felt I was no longer respected in the society. I felt helpless in front of my family and the rest of my relatives in the camp."

"My dignity is restored"

Mohamed now is actively involved in making clothes and mattresses as part of a project supported by HelpAge International.

He also trains others in tailoring skills at the camp's social centre.

Mohamed says: "I am grateful to HelpAge for restoring my dignity and respect in society.

"Through my work at the social centre, I now have an income for my family and am able to send some of my children back to school."
