Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt , 62, Myanmar

Photo: HelpAge International 2009Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt is 62 years old. She lives with her grandson, aged eight, who was orphaned when he was three years old.

Before the cyclone, Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt lived on the river bank in Kyaik Lat township and ran a small shop from her home selling flowers and food snacks.

Left empty handed

When Nargis struck, she and her grandson fled quickly, leaving all their possessions behind. She was empty handed. Their home was also badly damaged.

In the aftermath of the cyclone, Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt partially repaired her home but the repairs lasted for only two weeks at a time. She also had to vacate the house each time the river levels rose.

Home sweet home

Before HelpAge intervened, Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt was planning to sell her pig and start a business selling vegetables so that she could permanently rebuild her home.

Now, with the help of a shelter grant, she has repaired her home and is able to use the proceeds from the pig to educate her grandson. She also received food, including rice, cooking oil and salt as well as blankets, mosquito nets and mattresses.
