Bass Bibi, 75, Pakistan

Bass Bibi is a 75-year-old widow from Nowshera. She has three daughters and two sons but they all married and moved way. They left her alone and now ignore the fact she even exists.

She has sixteen grandchildren whom she longs to see but none of them ever visit her.

Bass Bibi by her damaged home Bass Bibi has been abandoned by her many relatives HelpAge International 2010

When the floods struck her village, Bass had no one to turn to. She just prayed someone would help her and thankfully some young men in the neighborhood came to rescue her and took her to a safer place.

She stayed with the rest of the villagers for some time and later she returned to her house when it was safe.

But still, no sign of her relatives.

She said: "I thought my children would come to see me after the disaster struck the area but I was wrong. They don't care. I shouldn't expect anything from them anymore."

Bass's house was not in the best condition before the flood came and now, following the disaster, it has become even worse. The ceilings have been badly damaged and she has no means to get it fixed. She has no income and lives on whatever villagers can give her.

HelpAge gave Bass Bibi a blanket, shawl and hat for the winter season for which she is grateful.

She said: "The boys and girls from HelpAge are like my children. They provided me with the basic necessities when I needed them the most. I am very happy with the way HelpAge is helping us out in this difficult time."
