Highlighted impact

Age Demands Action 2008 saw considerable campaign successes. These included:

  • Six new social centres for older people in Bangladesh
  • The monthly pension in Nepal increased by 100%.
  • Governments in Ghana and Kenya moved forward plans to establish National Ageing Strategies.
  • A National Law for the Elderly was put forward before the National Assembly in Vietnam.
  • The Guardian newspaper in the UK featured an article about HelpAge's affiliate in Cameroon, The Regional Centre for the Welfare of Ageing Persons in Cameroon (RECEWAPEC) and their involvement in Age Demands Action.

Global petition launched

In 2008, the Age Demands Action global petition was launched. People across the world signed the petition to support older people's rights.

We aim to use the petition to push for a convention on the rights of older people.

It has growing support from UN groups working on ageing and many governments now acknowledge the need to appoint a UN special rapporteur on the rights of older people.
