Nandasena Perera
Nandasena, 64, has a daughter and a son and is a retired civil servant from Sri Lanka. Since his retirement, he has been engaging in local community work and is the Vice President of "Digasiri"- a Senior Citizen Committee in his village.
When the Committee was first set up in 2008, their understanding of human rights was limited, but over the years they have learned that older people do have rights and are now able to share this knowledge with their community.
"We appeal to governments to introduce new laws for the protection of older people and to create a better environment for them."
In recent years, special laws protecting women, children, youth and relgious groups have been introduced in Sri Lanka, Nandasena hopes that older people are next in line.
As a Senior Citizen Committee, in 2012, they participated in demonstrations and meetings on 1 October 2012 as part of Age Demands Action (ADA). Nandasena says that through ADA, he and his Committee are able to share their views with older people around the world.
