HelpAge International currently has programmes in Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and a regional programme in nine countries in South-East Europe. We plan to develop further programmes in other countries including Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Tajikistan. HelpAge International's Eastern Europe and Central Asia region has also given advice on ageing issues to external agencies, such as the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs, The British Red Cross, The Red Cross of Serbia and Montenegro, The Bulgarian Red Cross, and Mercy Corps in Georgia.
Some of our key projects are detailed below.

HelpAge International works with a network of regional partners in Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia and Montenegro from its regional project office in Ljubljana. The network aims to help older people to promote their rights and raise awareness about their needs. |

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldova has become the poorest country in Europe. Older Moldovans face serious difficulties, including poor pension provision, a lack of services and expensive medicines. HelpAge International is working with local partner Second Breath to build the capacity of five older people’s groups in northern Moldova. Older people in Kyrgyzstan struggle to pay for expensive services and medication, and lack opportunities to earn money. HelpAge International is working with two local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – the Foundation for Tolerance International (FTI) and the UMUT Resource Centre for the Elderly – to support 15 older people's groups and improve the lives of older people in southern Kyrgyzstan.
