Gloria cares for two of her grandchildren, aged eight and nine. She is secretary of the youth club and is an active member of the senior citizens' group supported by HelpAge International.

The group is monitoring the impact and delivery of government social-assistance programmes for older people.

Equal rights for older people

Older people have the same rights as everyone else. Their rights are protected under international law. But the rights of millions of older people across the world continue to be violated. They are denied access to health services, social security, education and legal services. They are discriminated against at work, are prevented from inheriting property and experience violence and abuse.

Research

Little information is systematically collected on the violation of older people's rights. HelpAge International seeks to identify rights abuses and the barriers to accessing rights and entitlements for older people.  Read about our current and planned research projects


Facts and figures

According to the Tanzanian Government, 17,220 women were abused between 1998 and 2001 as a result of witchcraft allegations. 10% of these women were killed. Read more
