Highlights from Age Demands Action 2007

The government made a commitment to:

  • Allocate part of the annual budget specifically for the protection of vulnerable older persons.
  • Implement a social security policy, including security for older people and recognition of older carers.

What's planned for 2008?

This year the Senior Citizens Association of Zambia (SCAZ) will organise a delegation of older people to meet with the Vice-President and the Minister of Community Development.

The delegation will call for a commitment from the government to:

  • Provide free and accessible healthcare for people over 65, including specialist diagnostic services and geriatric medicines.
  • Provide mobile health services where clinics or hospitals are not available.
  • Implement a universal non-contributory pension for people aged 60 and above within the next year.
  • Extend the cash transfer scheme, currently being  piloted in five districts, to ten more districts.

The delegation

Mrs B Sikanyika, 72, runs an NGO working with orphans, vulnerable children and older caregivers.

Mrs M Mwansa, 57, is Executive Director of an NGO looking after orphans and vulnerable children and older caregivers. She also runs home-based care services.

Mr S Munakombwe, 72, takes care of four grandchildren. He is a member of the senior citizens' association.

Mr R C Mwale, 60, a practising lawyer and a grandparent. He is passionate about older people's rights.


Fast facts

• 5% of the population is over 60. By 2050 this figure is projected to reach 6%.

• 65% of men and 35% of women over the age of 60 are economically active.
