Cecilia was brutally attacked with a machete. Attacks like this are common in Tanzania, where single older women are often accused of witchcraft.

Highlights from Age Demands Action 2007

  • Regional delegations met with regional authorities to follow up on the commitments made in the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.
  • The delegation received comprehensive media coverage in key local and national newspapers.

What's planned for 2008?

The delegation will make a short presentation on the positive steps that the government has taken so far. It will also show how these steps have greatly improved the lives of older people in Tanzania.

The meeting is expected to address the President of Tanzania, and follow-up meetings are planned with:

  • the Minister for Health and Social Welfare
  • members of district councils, including District Executive Directors
  • mayors and council chairpersons who are responsible for implementing policy on the ground.

Asks will include a commitment from the government to:

  • introduce non-contributory social pensions for older people.
  • implement a financial programme of support for older people caring for AIDS orphans.
  • put measures in place to protect older people against witchcraft allegations and murder.

The delegation

Mr Iskaka Msigwa, works with PADI, a HelpAge International partner organisation. Mr Msigwa is also a keen speaker on issues affecting older people.

Mr Abdallah Majumba, retired education officer. Mr Majumba brings the grassroots voice to the delegation.

Mama Minja, retired banker, now employed as a Manager at CHAWAMA, a partner of HelpAge International.

Mr Godwin Mkanwa, District Council Chairperson for Mpwapwa district in Dodoma region.

Mama Mshigwa, an older carer working for HelpAge International's partner, TEWOREC, Mama Mshigwa has experience of many of the problems on the ground.

Mr Abdallah Mtopa, long serving politician, now the Kilwa District Council Chairperson and coordinator for all Tanzania's other regional chairpersons.
