Over 2,000 people took part in a march across Durban in support of older people's rights.

What happened in 2008?

HelpAge International's affiliate, the Muthande Society for the Aged (MUSA), planned a highly visible campaign for Age Demands Action this year.

As part of their preparation delegates took part in blogging training facilitated by Global Voices' Rising voices programme. Global Voices is a blogging network that encourages voices from under-represented groups and areas. Watch a video about their experience.

Over 2,000 people made their voices heard in support of older people in a march across Durban. Following the rally, a delegation of older people met with government ministers to discuss how they could make changes that would support the rights and needs of older people in South Africa.

Highlights from 2007

  • Thousands of older people joined a 4km walk in Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal, during which older people danced, sang and displayed their slogans.
  • The town mayor and officials from the Health Department, Department of Security and Department of Social Services participated in the day’s events.

• 7% of the population is aged over 60. This figure is expected to increase to 13% by 2050.

• 38% of men and 14% of women over 60 are engaged in economic activity.
