Many older people have been displaced due to fighting within Colombia.

What happened in 2008?

HelpAge International in Latin America liaised with partners in Costa Rica to bring together a delegation of older people to meet with the Mayor of San Jose.

The delegation asked the Mayor to put their concerns forward to national policy makers and ask them to commit to:

  • provide a non-contributory state pension for everyone over 60.
  • provide emergency assistance to internally displaced older people.

Fast facts

• 8% of the population is over the age of 60. By 2050 this figure is expected to rise to 23%

• 56% of people aged over 60 are active within the labour force.
