A planning meeting for Age Demands Action 2009 was held in Moldova in September

Moldovan actress, Nina Caranfil will support Age Demands Action in the country this year

What's happening in 2009?

Many partner organisations will join the Age Demands Action delegation this year, uniting under the theme of realising older people's rights through improved access to social security and health.

Together, they will travel across Moldova engaging in a variety of activities such as poster drawing events for children.

They will also be presenting a substantial list of asks to the government, including:

  • Approval and adoption of a national Strategy on Ageing
  • Increasing the basic pension to reach the minimum annual subsistence requirement
  • Increased access to benefits for a wider range of pensioners, including older carers and those caring for children left behind after their parents have migrated
  • Expansion of the national medical insurance policy and widening the range of services and tests available to older people.

Their work is often sold at exhibitions in the local town and even in the Moldovan capital, Chişinău.

What happened in 2008?

At a meeting between the Moldovan delegation and government officials, ministers announced the launch of a new programme to ensure financial support for the most vulnerable older people. Older people seeking assistance will have their income and support needs assessed by evaluating the situation of their immediate family.

Other exciting commitments were:

  • To open more community centres and to improve the facilities at those already running
  • To distribute medicines to local doctors in areas where there is no pharmacy, ensuring easier access to appropriate treatment for older persons
  • A group of doctors will be trained abroad over three years to become specialists in geriatrics.
