Over 100 million older people worldwide are living on less than US$1 day, and must continue working in old age to support themselves and their extended families.
HelpAge International has been talking to older people in Peru, Uganda and Bangladesh as part of a project to highlight their experiences of working in developing countries.
One in fourteen people living with HIV are over 50.
72-year-old Birakwete lives in Uganda. He looks after five grandchildren and runs small second-hand clothes shop. But ill health and poor sales, combined with rising food prices, mean he struggles to earn enough to feed his family.
Within 50 years, one person in five will be over 60. By 2050, 22 out of every 100 people will be over 60. Yet over 100 million older people live on less than a dollar a day. Find out more
