In Uganda, HIV and AIDS continues to have a major impact on older people and their families. Many of Uganda's 1.7 million orphans are cared for by older people.
Older people suffer abuses of their inheritance rights as a result of HIV and AIDS. Younger family and community members claim older people’s land as their own and try to remove them from their homes, often using threats and physical force.
HelpAge's local partner, Uganda Reach the Aged Association, helps families affected by HIV and AIDS to create memory books and write wills. In the event of inheritance rights disputes, a deceased parent's will can improve the chances of successful litigation.
Many children orphaned at a young age have little or no memory of their parents. Memory books can provide children with some sense of comfort after their parent's death.
