Andrea, 93, lost one child in the earthquake but helped in the rescue of her grandchildren. She lives in Port-au-Prince.
She said: “I was in my children’s house at the time of the earthquake. Concrete fell everywhere and I tried to help my grandchildren by carrying them. I have lots of grandchildren.
Then a big oil drum rolled on to me and knocked me down. All the children were screaming: ‘Help me, help me!’ I fell down with children in my arms.
Before the earthquake I did a little commerce selling aluminium cooking utensils. But my house fell down and all my stock was wrecked.
I haven’t had a chance to see a doctor but I am in lots of pain from where the oil drum hit me. Now we have no money and my adult children look after me.
In the day it is too hot and in the night too cold. We are scared of what to do when the rains come.”
