Older woman, Tanzania © John Cobb/HelpAge International

Our project in Tanzania is helping widows to retain their property.

Comic Relief has been one of our key donors and partners since 1996. It recently granted us nearly £1.5 million for a three-year programme to support older carers of people living with HIV/AIDS, orphans and vulnerable children in Africa. We are working with partners in ten countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Comic Relief is supporting three more HelpAge International projects in Africa:

  • work with older people in Tanzania to raise awareness among government and civil-society organisations of what older people need to improve their lives
  • training older women in Tanzania as para-legal advisors, who advise other women in their communites about their inheritance rights, and help them to secure assets, such as property left to them by their late husbands
  • education and practical support to communities in Sukumuland, Tanzania, to challenge attitudes that lead to older women being accused of witchcraft and being blamed for HIV/AIDS, family conflict and inheritance disputes. These attitudes can result in abuse, impoverishment and the death of many women.
